Belangrijkste punten

  • A low-level sine sweep reveals more than a loud music demo
  • Original drivers are the main value driver on used subs
  • Always price door-to-door freight before agreeing

Sweep for rub before you listen loud

A slow sine sweep from 20 Hz upward will expose voice-coil rub, loose mounting bolts and cabinet buzz long before a music test does. Listen at low level first, then repeat at moderate level with the cabinet on a hard floor.

If you cannot test in person, ask the seller for a recorded sweep and a photo of each driver. A seller who has already done this will send it quickly; one who has not will change the subject.

Confirm the drivers are original

Re-coned subwoofers are extremely common, especially on DJ stock. Non-original kits can change sensitivity, power handling and tonal balance, and they usually void any remaining service relationship with the manufacturer.

Check the cone markings, spider colour and solder joints against reference photos for the model. If the price assumes original drivers and the photos do not support that, renegotiate or walk away.

  • Ask for driver part numbers, not just model names
  • Photograph the cone, spider and terminal area on arrival
  • Compare against a known-original unit whenever possible

Price the freight before the cabinet

Dual 18-inch subwoofers are heavy and awkward. Pallet freight, crating and insurance can add a meaningful percentage to the total, and some sellers quote ex-warehouse prices that exclude all of it.

Get a door-to-door freight quote with the actual packed dimensions and weight before you agree on a price. A cabinet that is cheap ex-warehouse but expensive to crate is not a bargain.

Veelgestelde vragen

How do I know if a used subwoofer has been re-coned?

Compare cone markings, spider colour and solder joints with reference photos for the exact model, and ask for driver part numbers. Non-original kits often look close but differ in small details.

Is a used subwoofer with cosmetic damage still worth buying?

Usually yes if the cabinet is structurally sound and the drivers test clean. Cosmetic damage affects resale value, not necessarily performance, but cracks near the mounting points should be treated seriously.

Should I buy used subwoofers in pairs?

Pairs from the same batch are preferable for tonal matching and easier resale. Single cabinets are fine when you already own a matching unit.
